Brightmusic musician Sean Wang sent us an update recently.  His email said, “I have recently received my PhD in musicology and humanities from Stanford University, and have joined the violin faculty (in addition to music history) at Vanderbilt. Just a few days ago I gave a recital at Vanderbilt, an event that was video recorded and will be broadcast on Nashville Public Television. The program included Baroque and contemporary solo-violin pieces by J.S. Bach, Mario Davidovsky, Elliott Carter, and Heinrich Biber.  I look forward to taking part in this coming season!”

We congratulate Sean on this great accomplishment.  Here’s what Vanderbilt’s press coverage of the event. Â

Brightmusic received an enthusiastic concert review from an attendee of last night’s concert.   “Markb” begins by saying, “Last night I had the pleasure, and we’re talking PLEASURE here, of attending OKC’s Brightmusic Chamber Music Ensemble’s first concert of this season. If you live in central Oklahoma, you owe it to yourself to find several of their concerts this season to attend.”  Read the entire review here.

Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble opened the 2008-2009 concert season with an incredible evening of music.  Our guest cellist Morten Zeuthen was unable to  travel to the United States due to sickness, yet our community of talented musicians returned a great concert.

The evening’s revised program:

Mozart, Sonata for Violin and Piano, D. 301
Debussy, Sonata for Cello and Piano
Milhaud, Suite for Clarinet, Violin and Piano, Op. 157b
Sargon, Klezmusik for Clarinet and Piano
Brahms, Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, Op. 114
Below (L-R) Jonathan Ruck, cello; Chad Burrow, clarinet; Gregory Lee, violin; Amy Cheng, piano

Three BrightMusic Chamber Ensemble musicians were featured last night with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.  Gregory Lee, violin, Jonathan Ruck, cello, and Amy Cheng, piano played Beethoven’s Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano in C.  Congratulations to these three fine musicians on a great performance full of excitement and musicianship.

This concert will be broadcast by KCSC FM 91.5 on Sunday, October 12 at 5:00 pm on Community Curtain Call.

Our bassoonist, Carl Rath, sent us his 2008 summer travel log.

I taught and performed at the Red Lodge Music Festival in Montana for the 29th year. I performed on 5 recitals, taught 7 bassoon students, and coached two student chamber music ensembles. Great group of students! They performed my arrangement of The Beatles’ “And Your Bird Can Sing.”

Gregory Lee, violin, sent us some photos from his recent visit to China and Taiwan.  Gregory arrived in China shortly after the devastating earthquake in Sichuan Province.  About the earthquake, he had this to say:  “I’ve spent the last few days in Beijing giving masterclasses and rehearsing for my recital which I had tonight.  Due to the national days of mourning beginning today, the government cancelled all public events, so my recital was moved to a classroom and called a ‘class’.  It was low key but I understand this was an exceptional circumstance; it is certainly very devastating for the country.  I haven’t felt any aftershocks here.”
